Welcome

More than 8500 km in length, the Brazilian coastline displays not only a great diversity of ecosystems but an abundance of natural coastal-marine resources as well. About 22% of the total Brazilian population is located in the coastal zone, almost forty million inhabitants. Within this context, it is apparent that coastal environments constitute important areas where many important economic and social activities are concentrated. It is thus evident that the increasing socioeconomic pressure on Brazilian coastal environments calls for greater understanding of patterns of use, if these fragile environments are to be conserved or maintained. Unfortunately, it is not an exclusive Brazilian scenario. In this context, interoperability and data integration emerges as an essential attribute for collaborative mapping. With the purpose to convene a meeting of international and national coastal researchers that would encourage dissemination of research results in this thematic area to scientific communities the Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, the Fundação Universidade do Rio Grande, the Universidade de São Paulo and the Associação Brasileira de Oceanografia (AOCEANO) jointly organized the nineth (9th) International Symposium on GIS and Computer Cartography for Coastal Zone Management (CoastGIS’09). A well-known event in the field of the application of GIS and the related technologies to coastal and marine issues. It is held once every two years under the joint scientific sponsorship of the Commission on Coastal Systems of the International Geographical Union (CCS/IGU) and the Commission on Marine Cartography of the International Cartographic Association (CMC/ICA).

As a major event, the CoastGIS series attracts an international audience of coastal researchers, managers and practitioners who use one or more of the geospatial technologies. Considering the potential interest for the Conference by people who are not "GI experts" such as researchers not directly involved in the use and management of geo-related data, or decision makers and planners in Administrations and Local Bodies the organization committee understood that these groups would benefit from a joint event. Therefore, this edition will host two meetings: the V Congress on Planning and Management of the Coastal Areas of the Countries of Portuguese Expression and the Seminario de Difusión de la Red Iberoamericana en Teledetección Aplicada a la Prevención de Riesgos Geológicos Litorales.
